Good reading

As we all know, looking after yourself and your family is not just a matter of exercise and healthy eating. Mental health is just as important and having a disability, or having a child with a disability, can place a great strain on your emotional wellbeing. Depression is an under-recognised condition in Australia, where the tradition has often been to ‘put on a brave face’.

Two new books are available to help if you, or someone you love, is affected by mental illness.

Taking Care of Yourself and Your Family offers information about a range of mental health and related issues, a guide to helping others and a toolbox of strategies for self-help. Although it was designed primarily for use by people in rural and remote areas, who have more limited access to counselling and psychology services, it is a valuable resource for everyone.

The BeyondBlue Guide for Carers, is a guide for supporting and caring for a person with depression, anxiety or a related disorder. It’s divided into two parts – caring for others and caring for yourself – and is drawn from research and real-life carers’ experience, with practical information and useful tips.

Both books are available free to The Scene readers in New South Wales. Please contact Katrina Welch on 02 9479 7237 or kwelch@tscnsw.org.au if you would like a copy.
